The first diplomatic mission of the Maldives was established in Sri Lanka in July 1965, by upgrading the Maldives Representatives Office in Colombo to an Embassy. The Embassy was closed down in 1976 and re-opened in 1979. The Embassy changed to a High Commission in 1985.
